After starting officially in 2000 as a little laboratory with only two analyzers and a handful of technicians, the NIMR-MMRC Main Laboratory has grown in the last ten years to one of the biggest and most important research laboratories in the Mbeya region with state-of-the-art equipment in six different sections, covering sample processing, hematology, coagulation, biochemistry, serology and viral load.
During this development the Cell Technology (CTL) Laboratory evolved from the initial laboratory in 2002 and is since presenting the immunological part of the Main Laboratory.
Since 2007 the main laboratory is proud to be - until today – the only CAP (College of American Pathologists) certified laboratory in Tanzania.
The test range is covering a wide choice of different tests such as HIV, HBV, HSV2 and Syphillis serology through ELISA and Western blot methods, HIV 1 Viral Load testing (HIV 1 Monitor test, Roche), automated biochemistry testing (Roche Cobas Integra), hematology automated (Coulter Act5diff and Sysmex KX21N) and manual, clotting tests (Start4 Diagnostica Stago) and Immunophenotyping CD4/CD8 (BD Facs Calibur).
In its function as a research laboratory the Main Laboratory is performing diagnostic and follow up blood tests for all clinical trials conducted at MMRC.
Most positions in the laboratory are covered by Tanzanian Lab Technologists, Lab Technicians and Lab Assistants, giving emphasis to local capacity building.
Currently the main positions in the laboratory are
Cornelia Lueer, Lab Manager
Lilian Njovu, Lab Manager
Abisa Kisinda/Triphonia Mbena, QA/QC Manager
Abisai Kisinda/Triphonia Mbena, Lab Supervisor
Selina Jackson , Safety Manager
