Mission

To conduct, coordinate, regulate and promote scientifically and ethically sound, high quality health research and deliver evidence-based information that is responsive to the needs of human wellbeing.

Vision

To be an institution of excellence for advancement of health research and development in Tanzania and beyond.

Studies

We conduct research on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB), Malaria and other relevant tropical diseases by evaluating new interventions, utilizing vaccines, drugs and diagnostics focusing on basic research, clinical trials, epidemiological research, operational research and social sciences.

Infrastructure

The center has a CAP accredited research laboratory with equipment covering sample processing, hematology, coagulation, biochemistry, serology and viral load. We also have a state-of-the-art TB laboratory performing various diagnostic procedures. There is also a TB Clinic and ward and a dedicated pharmacy.

Mobile lab

It aims to offer effective intervention and diagnostic procedures in rural areas.  Its facilities include fluorescence smear microscope, a Cepheid GeneXpert® MTB/RIF analyzer, a Guava flow cytometer for CD4 counts, a Sysmex cell-counter, a Reflotron® Sprint clinical chemistry analyzer, refrigeration system for samples and film and music system for shows and info sessions for communities.
Quality Research

Quality Research

High quality research is a major driver of scientific progress. We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of health research in Tanzania. We aim to create knowledge that can be used by scientists and the community in general. Our ultimate goal is to create measurable improvement in the health care system with the help of evidence based methods.

Community Engagement

Community Engagement

Community Engagement is a vital part of our research activities. We work on building partnerships between the research team and the community to ensure that the research performed is ethically sound and it targets relevant health issues. This partnership is strengthened through a Community Advisory Board comprised of representatives from human rights, local community leaders, religious leaders, local and government authorities by acting as a bridge between the research team and the community in general.

Capacity Development

Capacity Development

Capacity building leading to ethical, quality and innovative research translates into better health in our communities. Our institution is proud to be at the forefront of introducing innovative technologies in the region and the country. Capacity development on the use of the above is one of our priorities to enable the use of faster more accurate and safe diagnosis and treatment methods.
